Digital Object Identifiers

Digital Object Identifiers (DOIs) are persistent identifiers which can be used to consistently and accurately reference digital objects and/or content. The DOIs provide a way for the ADS resources to be cited in a similar fashion to traditional scholarly materials. More information on DOIs at the ADS can be found on our help page.

Full Record - Carrock Mine (PRN: 8861)

PRN8861
Site or location nameCarrock Mine
Summary
DescriptionThe Carrock Mining Syndicate re-opened the mine with government support in 1913 to extract wolfram an ore of tungsten. Carrock and Castle-an-Dinas near St Austell were the only souces in Britain. A workforce of up to 100 extracted 14,000 tons of ore which produced almost 100 tons of 16% concentrate. With the end of the war the market was flooded with supplies from around the world and the mine closed. Sporadic re-openings occurred during WW2, Korean War and 1970s with final closure in the late 1980s. The quantities produced at Carrock were a fraction of the amount required. Tungsten was used in steel for armour plating and cutting tools.
