Description	The Standard Shipbuilding Company was set up in 1915 by a consortium of shipping companies including Lord Inchcape of P&O. The site included the E Finch yard and a new site on the Meads where new slipways would be constructed to build standardised designs to replace vessels lost in the war. A major difficulty faced by the business was the lack of accommodation and infrastructure in the immediate area for construction workers and the skilled shipyard workers that they looked to attract. The company had plans for large numbers of houses for their workforce in a 'Garden City' adjacent to the site. Finch's Yard and The Meads were purchased in early 1916 but by September accommodation problems were delaying progress. By mid 1917 no vessels had been completed and no keels laid on the new slips and in September the yard was taken over by the Government as National Shipyard No 1 with plans for further expansion. By the end of the war only one vessel had been launched from Finch's Yard and one keel had been laid in October 1918 on the new slips. Shipbuilding continued for a short period after the war then as an engineering works. The aerodynamic box deck sections for the Severn Bridge were constructed on-site and floated downstream. Standard Shipbuilding had plans in 1916 for a Garden City at Hardwick for their workers to be built on the rising ground above their new shipyard. The designs were prepared by London architects Dunn, Watson & Curtis Green. The houses are constructed in concrete blocks which were sourced locally. Completion of the houses was delayed due to nationalisation of the yard in 1917.
