Site or location name | Lovat Scouts Practice Trenches
Summary | Dreamy Hollow Woodland Campsite
Description | The site of surviving practice trench earthworks, associated with the 1st and 2nd Lovat Scouts. The site covers an area of 3.5 hectares, located in a wooded area now in use as the Dreamy Hollow Woodland Campsite. An extensive trench system survives within this area, running from East to West; consisting of forward fire trenches, adjoining communication trenches and rear supervision trench. A number of dugouts and latrines also survive within the trench network. The surviving trench network conforms to the design outlined in the 'Notes for Infantry Officers on Trench Warfare' manual of 1916. It is believed that these trenches were constructed by the 1st and 2nd Lovat Scouts, who were billeted in the area between April to September 1915. A second, opposing trench system was also present to the North. This system is believed to have been a replica German trench system, to be used to practice attacks. This system no longer survives due to ploughing. The discovery of screw pickets in and around the trenches, suggests that barbed wire obstacles were also erected as part of this practice trench system. However, these may relate to activity in the area during the Second World War. It is likely that the area was re-used during the Second World War for training, possibly by the local Home Guard, as a number of Mills Bomb base plugs have been discovered in the area; all dated 1940. A small section of the surviving trench has recently been restored by the landowner. A thorough archaeological survey of the site is recommended to ascertain the sites' extent and aid interpretation.
