DescriptionThe Carlisle Union Workhouse buildings were taken over as a War Hospital in October 1917 to provide 400 beds with a further 250 beds in the Norman Street and Brook Street Schools. Patients were collected from Carlisle's Citadel Station. Capacity at times rose to 861 patients. The buildings were later used as the General and Maternity Hospitals and are currently a campus for the University of Cumbria.
