DescriptionThe Carlisle Union Workhouse buildings were taken over as a War Hospital in October 1917 to provide 400 beds with a further 250 beds in the Norman Street and Brook Street Schools. Patients were collected from Carlisle's Citadel Station. Capacity at times rose to 861 patients.
