Summary
DescriptionThe White Star liner RMS Oceanic launched in 1899 was requisitioned on the outnreak of war in August 1914. Following fitting with 4.7' guns the ship was commissioned as an Armed Merchant Cruiser on 8th August 1914. A month later dispatched to Northern Scottish waters the vessel struck the Waster Hoevdi rocks off Foula in fog on 8th September 1914. (60-8-13N, 2-7-21W) The crew of 400 were taken off by the Aberdeen trawler Glenogil and transferred to other naval vessels. The vessel broke up a fortnight later. The loss within weeks of the start of the war was hushed up to avoid embarrassment and was later blamed on the navigator. The superstructure was salvaged in 1924.
