Summary | |||||
Description | Victorian coastal gun battery built in 1859 and modified in 1899 in current configuration for two 6' guns. The Heugh Battery engaged two German battle cruisers and an armoured cruiser on the morning of 16th December 1914 scoring several hits on the attacking vessels. The cruisers closed to within 3 miles of the shore engaging the battery and shelling the harbour and industry only withdrawing after a submarine was seen to leave the harbour entrance. The battery was manned by the Territorials of the Durham - Royal Garrison Artillery (Defended Ports). The first direct military casualty on British soil Private Theophilus Jones of the 18th Battalion Durham Light Infantry was killed by a German shell nearby. After a few weeks training five hundred Durham Pals had been deployed to Hartlepool in November 1914 to bolster the defences. | ||||
