Changes to the road layout in 1982, as part of the ‘Stoke Bridge and approaches’ road scheme, involved the demolition of property fronting the west side of St Peter’s Street at its junction with Greyfriars Road, and opposite St Peter’s Church. Suffolk County Council’s Highways Department gave the Suffolk Archaeological Unit permission to excavate the frontage prior to highway works.
Deposits were sufficiently shallow (1.2-1.4m below ground surface) to allow excavation close to the road edge and the only constraints were the substantial concrete foundations and brick walls of the demolished building (Barclays Bank) which were left in situ.
8 pits were identified, 3 dated c.700-850, and 5 dated c.850-900. A column soil sample for environmental analysis was taken from pit 0007.
