Digital Object Identifiers

Digital Object Identifiers (DOIs) are persistent identifiers which can be used to consistently and accurately reference digital objects and/or content. The DOIs provide a way for the ADS resources to be cited in a similar fashion to traditional scholarly materials. More information on DOIs at the ADS can be found on our help page.

Overview

The Montgomeryshire Placename Database contains over 10,000 modern and 23,000 associated placenames for the county of Montgomeryshire and was complied between 1987 and 1998 by members of the Powysland Club. The database is primarily designed to provide historical information on modern placenames and can be searched using a full placename or element, parish or six figure grid reference. The database provides information on two distinct levels: detailed geographical information and notes on modern 'top-level' placenames and historical information, notes and provenance on past related placenames.

The fields included in the current database for modern 'top-level' placenames comprise:

  • Name - 'top-level' or modern placename.
  • Locality - placename locality
  • Parish - parish name.
  • County - county, mainly 'Mont' i.e. Montgomeryshire although there exists one entry for 'Rad' (Radnorshire).
  • National Grid Reference - Ordnance Survey Grid reference.
  • Easting - six figure easting.
  • Northing - six figure northing.
  • NGR Accuracy - easting/northing accuracy e.g. to within 100 meters.
  • Notes - notes made by original data collector.

Whereas the fields containing information on related historical placenames comprise:

  • Name - related historical placename.
  • Year - date when name first identified.
  • Source - source of name.
  • Source Data - Additional details on source such as volume and page numbers.
  • Author / Editor - author / editor of source.

In addition to working backwards from the modern placename, the database can also be searched across both modern and historical placenames allowing modern places to be identified from historical names
