Hays Storage Services Ltd, Dagenham (DA-HS 93)

Introduction

An archaeological investigation took place between the 4th of October 1993 and the 5th of November 1993 at Hays Storage Services Ltd., Pooles Lane, Ripple Road, Dagenham, Essex. This was in advance of the redevelopment of the site by Hays Storage Services Ltd., who commissioned the work as part of the fulfilment of the planning conditions. The investigation was based on the project design drawn up in reference to the project brief by Jim Hunter, Archaeological Planning Officer.

The archaeological investigation was required as the development lies close to sites producing pre-historic artefacts and is positioned above a wide band of alluvium along the River Thames foreshore, preserving organic material which may be of archaeological significance.

Within this belt of alluvium, two Bronze Age trackways have been found during excavations, to the west in Beckton in the London Borough of Newham, and to the east in the Rainham Marsh, in the London Borough of Havering. To the north-west of the development is a known crop mark believed to be a track way, a watching brief in advance of the construction of Goresbrook Leisure Centre built across this feature produced an arrow head datable to the late Neolithic. Also in the early 20th century there have been occasional finds of Palaeolithic Handaxes which are now held by Chelmsford Museum.
