During October 2017 Oxford Archaeology undertook a trial trench evaluation at Reading Road and Wallingford Road, Wallingford. The evaluation was undertaken in advance of the construction of a new retirement home.
The evaluation revealed two ditches, which were undated. Trench 1 contained a shallow-sided north-east to south-west orientated ditch and Trench 5 contained a substantial north to south-orientated ditch. No finds or archaeologically rich fills were identified. Even though the ditches were undated, they may potentially relate to prehistoric activity in the wider area which includes numerous examples of prehistoric ditches, enclosures and trackways. Based on the results of the evaluation the site is believed to have low archaeological potential.
