Further Information: It is believed quarrying first begin in the 11th and 12th centuries (Alexander 1995: 114). This old pit was reopened in 1923 (Arkell 1947: 121). It is currently owned by Clipsham Quarry Company and supplies building stone when required (Leary 1983: 23).
