Further Information: Several hundred pits can be detected in an area known as 'Cole's Pits' south of Faringdon. These pits cover an area of about 1,700 by 600 feet (roughly 14 acres) and it is believed that they were originally as much as 30 feet deep. O.G.S. Crawford investigated these pits in the 1930's and established their function to be Medieval millstone quarries being worked at least as early as the 16th century (Crawford 1953: 102).
