A large area of the hillside is covered in large humps and bumps, reminiscent of the 'hills and holes' of the Medieval quarries at Barnack. At Dumpling's Down the quarries were clearly abandoned many centuries ago, and all the hillocks are now covered in thick turf (Tatton-Brown 1998: 41). Tatton-Brown and Professor Desmond Donovan are convinced that this area, in addition to Quarry Hill, New Barn were the most likely source for the stone for Salisbury Cathedral (Tatton-Brown 1998: 41). |
