This stone and other Sussex Marbles were in steady demand for ornamental purposes, not only in the churches of the Middle Ages but for long afterwards. It could also be seen at many of the big houses (e.g. Petworth House). It even travelled as far as Cambridge in 1583 for the porch of the old chapel of Corpus Christi College which no longer survives (Clifton-Taylor & Simmmons 1987: 179). |
