Quarrying at Chilmark may have taken place as early as the Roman period. However, early documentary records state that it was used at Salisbury Cathedral in the 1480's although on a small scale. It was previously believed that Chilmark stone supplied Salisbury Cathedral, but Tatton-Brown (1998: 40) believes that if this was the case there ought to be clear evidence of later medieval quarries in the area. Those that do exist are of 19th and 20th century date and the majority are underground. The early stone for Salisbury cathedral was more likely to be Tisbury stone (Tatton-Brown 1998: 40).
