General Comments:

Highley stone had a wide reputation during the 18th and 19th centuries largely due to its quality but also due to its proximity to the River Severn, the major transport artery of eastern Shropshire and counties to the south. This stone outcroped in massive beds in the vicinity of Highley and Stanley to the west of the Severn (Scard 1990: 61-62).

Known Quarries: Stanley Quarry, Highley.
