General Comments: |
Horsham stone was used particularly as a roofing slate but also for building, walling and paving slabs due to its fissile quality (Howe 1910: 324). Horsham slate roofs weighed even more than Purbeck slates and needed very massive support from the rafters, as a result a sagging ridge is very common (Clifton-Taylor & Simmons 1986: 141). The stone has excellent durability and weathering properties. |
