Quarries

General Comments:

This stone is believed to have been quarried in the area around Mansfield since the Medieval period and one of the earliest recorded quarries was referred to as 'le Quarels' in 1315 (Alexander 1995: 123). It is believed that stone quarried close to Nottingham Castle in the mid 14th century was used for repairs to the building (Davey 1976: 23). The 19th century saw its popularity grow with builders and architects of both the white and red varieties, although only the white variety is quarried today.

Known Quarries: Gregory's Quarries, Mansfield,
Sills Quarry, Mansfield.
