Quarries

General Comments:

It is likely that the Romans knew about Portland Stone and certainly it was worked intermittently throughout the Middle Ages. In the 14th century the stone was sent to Exeter and later to London but local requirements were modest. The industry really began in the early 17th century and has continued until the present day although demand has reduced. Surviving quarries date from the 19th and 20th centuries (Stanier 2000: 100).
