Hand Specimen Description: | This hard, bioclastic limestone has a 'featherbed' appearance produced by vast quantities of tiny shell fragments (bivalves and ostracods) which were deposited in fresh water (Clifton-Taylor & Simmons 1987: 60). The rock is very variable, ranging from a coarse texture where the shell fragments are 6mm across, to fine where they are 3mm in size. Usually these shell fragments have been removed by solutions leaving cavities in the matrix. It is poor to moderately well sorted with a hackly feel. |
