A fine grained, crystalline, well cemented, hard orthoquartize. It comprises tiny crystals of pure quartz that are so tightly locked together that they give the rock great strength. The upper surfaces of the stone are irregular and rough and contain numerous small holes now mostly lined with silica and filled with iron stained sand which are the traces of fossil plant roots (c.3cm in length) (Gallois 2001), (Geddes 2000: 60-64). It is an orthoquartzite comprising quartz, plagioclase feldspar, chert, dark iron ore and heavy minerals in a silica matrix.
