It is known as 'Stink Stone' because when it is newly quarried it emits a strong fetid odour. This is due to the pyrite which is present and in desseminated form contributes to the dark colour of some limestones and to the hydrogen sulphide smell which some of them emit when struck (Ashurst & Dimes 1990: 89).
