General Colour Description:

A cream to grey coloured stone.

Hand Specimen Description:

A hard, well sorted, fissile, medium grained, calcareous sandstone. The best slates consist of 'concretionary, impersistent masses of flaggy calcareous grey sandstone, streaked and shot with white ooliths and fossils' (Arkell 1947: 132).
