Quarries

General Comments:

This was an important local industry in the early 18th to late 19th century. The main quarries could be found at Brand, Groby, Swithland Wood and Woodhouse Eaves but these are long abandoned and flooded (Lott 2001:100). The stone was used mainly for roofing material, but these thick heavy slates didn't cleave as well as their Welsh counterparts in the 19th century, so the industry declined during the last quarter of the 19th century (Ashurst & Dimes 1990: 142).

Known Quarries: Swithland Woods Quarries, Leicestershire.
