Quarries

General Comments:

Quarrying was the first major industry in the area and from the Post-Medieval period quarries supplied stone for local buildings. From the 1820s, the demand for this stone developed rapidly due to the vast dock construction in Liverpool and later stone was also used in many civic buildings in Liverpool and Manchester. Unfortunately, by the 1900s the majority of quarrying had ceased with only the North Quarry at Weston continuing until 1942 (ICI Project Pathway: n.d.).

Known Quarries: Weston Quarries, Runcorn.
