Description: This stone was used for the piers of the Roman bridge that spanned the North Tyne (Watson 1911: 119). The bridge which Watson is referring to, may be the 'Aelian Bridge' located between Newcastle and Gateshead, it was built by order of Emperor Hadrian in AD 122.
