Description
A (long): The only carved face is surrounded by a flat-band moulding. Within the moulding is a row of balusters which are bellying in shape, splayed, and with a single moulding at the top and bottom. B, C and D: Broken off. E and F: Roughly dressed.
Discussion
The baluster type is the same as on 24-8, but this is the only piece at Hexham carved with a continuous row of balusters, such as one finds at Jarrow (nos. 25-7), rather than with groups of three. It seems to be a complete impost with only part of the side mouldings surviving, and, although it may be part of the same scheme as the other Hexham pieces with this ornament, its more weathered appearance and lesser width possibly mean that it was associated with a minor opening (Cramp 1974, 117-18).
