West Yorkshire Archaeology Service is archiving the results of its geophysical surveys with the Archaeology Data Service.
For each site in the archive there is:
The reports are archived as MS Word documents and as ASCII text files as a preservation format.
Figures are archived separately as CorelDraw or AutoCAD 2000 files.Please note that the majority of the figures contain embedded Ordnance Survey data which, for copyright reasons, we are unable to make available for downloading. Copies of these figures without the OS data are available as GIF files which should print at the original size on 300dpi printers. Full copies of the reports including full location details are lodged with the West Yorkshire SMR.
The survey data are archived as Geocon and as Contors data files. For each survey there is a large collection of data files and these are bundled into ZIP files to simplify downloading.
Geocon is Archeological Services, West Yorkshire Archaeology Service in-house software. The data are 'raw' but contain interpolated readings. The grid order is represented by a 'gif' file (grid information file).
Contors is a programme written by John Haigh, School of Computing and Mathematics, University of Bradford, which reads square blocks of data and plots them as either dot density or greyscale images.
Data files in Contors format are refered to by ASWYAS as 'Q files'. Each 20m by 20m grid has been interpolated to 1600 readings and divided into four equal grids containing 400 readings. These files are renamed from the raw data files by substituting the first letter of the site code with 'Q' and multiplying by 4. Thus the raw data grid ahf1.dat (containing 800 readings) becomes four grids (each containing 400 readings) named qhf1.dat, qhf2.dat, qhf3.dat and qhf4.dat. Grid ahf2.dat would become qhf5.dat, qhf6.dat, qhf7.dat and qhf8.dat etc. The grid order is represented by a 'rep' file.
