Historic England NRHE Excavation Index for England
Two small trial trenches in the garden of a 1960s bungalow adjacent to the churchyard boundary wall on the west side of St Andrew's Church revealed traces of the Roman road from the Mendips to the River Avon, possibly RR540. Barrows Green Possible Barrow Middle Beach Car Park
National Trust HBSMR
On William Woodward's map of 1775 a mound is shown in a field called "Barrows Green". The site is now occupied by the Middle Beach car park and a low uneven mound about 30m in diameter and 1m high lies near the centre of the car park. There is a possibility that this is a disturbed Bronze Age burial mound although the name "barrow" is often used to describe a natural mound or hill.
The mound is now covered with rough grass and a number of conifers. The top of the mound is uneven, suggesting past disturbance of animal ...

Blacklands Possible Occupation Site S of Acton
National Trust HBSMR
A field called "Blacklands" in 1775 ( Woodward) lies south of a square parcel of land also called "Blacklands" which is not part of the Estate. The owner of this land mentioned that the soil on his property is indeed black, very different from the the orange-brown clay usually found above the Purbeck limestone bedrock. Black soil and the name blacklands are usually associated with ancient occupation sites where organic deposits over time have enriched the soil e.g. some of the fields where the Romano-British site at Norden lies are called Blacklands ( 112,233). There may well be an occupation ...
