Description: A Refuge for women opened in Fulham in 1856. Following this, the sentence of transportation for women was divided into three stages passed successively at Millbank, Brixton and Fulham. The Fulham Refuge was the female equivalent of a public works prison and selected women were trained in domestic skills. Fulham Refuge closed in 1888. It was located between Kings Road and Burlington Road. The site included a large block containing work rooms, school rooms and dormitories; a bakery and wash house; officer's quarters; infirmary; exercise grounds; chaplain's house; there was also an orchard and grounds.
