Description:
(NU 01334958) Cists found AD 1922 and 1948. (1)
A Bronze Age cist was discovered in 1922 on the south end of a low sandy ridge, about 120 yds north west of Borewell, near Scremerston, and 40yds east of the public road. The cist, which lay almost due east and west, was formed of thin sandstone slabs, and the cover measured 4ft x 3ft 10ins. It contained a female skull, fragments of a beaker, and two flints. The whole was about 6 inch below the surface. (2)
Two beakers in a cist were discovered at NU 01334958 18 inches below the surface during ploughing by Mr R C Renton in May 1948. This position approximates to that of the 1922 find, and the two cists were presumably in close proximity. (3)
Two bell beakers from Borewell, now in the Museum of Antiquities, Newcastle. (4)
The area of these finds is long established arable land, and there are no indications of a barrow. Beaker accession numbers 1948.7 and 8. (5)
