Help
New users are required to read the manual for applicants before starting to use the system. The step-by-step guide for applicants can be downloaded here.
How does the application process work?
This is the application for the request and approval of radiocarbon dates from Historic Environment Scotland. Please ensure that you meet the requirements in the pre-application checklist, before you apply. The full help manual can be found above, and there are also help buttons within each section to aid you in completing the form. If you are applying through the Archaeology Programme, please select the ‘HES Archaeology Programme’ option; if you are applying for dates from another part of HES, such as work on a Property in Care, please select the ‘HES- Other’ option. Please note that once you submit your form, you cannot go back and edit any of the details. If you do need to do this, please contact the Radiocarbon Manager, who will be able to unlock the form for you. The results from HES approved dates are published on Canmore and added to the National Record for the Historic Environment (NRHE), and may be otherwise shared with selected partners. However, you can request an embargo on this for up to 3 years.
Pre-application checklist
Before beginning an application you should be able to answer 'yes' to the following questions:
- Have you spoken to the radiocarbon manager at Historic Environment Scotland to receive pre-approval?
- Have you discussed your sample selection with the archaeologist at SUERC?
- Is your project registered on OASIS?
If your answer to any of these questions is no, please contact the HES Radiocarbon Manager: [email protected].
Note that you will need your OASIS ID and Canmore ID (if you have one) when completing the form.
