Each context allowed for multiple categories of free text. Context sheets have a traditional Description and Interpretation section with soil descriptions typically being described as free text in the Description section.

Stratigraphic Groups sheets allowed for separated Formation, Artefacts, General, Positive Features where field staff would write separately about each category.

Additional categories of free text could be assigned in the course of post-excavation. The most usual of these is Dating where a free text description concerning a dating description could be made.
