8 Location: Canterbury, Kent Name and type: St Gregory, Augustinian priory Founded: 1084 Dissolved: 1537 References: Hicks and Hicks 2001 Database code: XGRE88 (Excel data only) Large-scale excavations comprising burial grounds at west end of church, in nave and presbytery, cloister alley, totalling 92 graves (1251 burials from a cemetery south of the church were not examined). Only 91 burials analysed by Trevor Anderson and Jon Andrews. Phased broadly into three groups. Male to female ratio was 2.63M:1F (50:19), with 23% subadults and 16% elderly. West cemetery comprised 12/38 (32%) infant burials, but only six (16%) females. In contrast, nave of church had 53% male and 41% female of 32 burials dated 1145-1537. Females had surprisingly high levels of carious infection. Three wooden coffins, eight stone cists, and one burial with chalice and gold thread vestments.
