The area of the whole structure covers approx 1.0 km square with the top platform covering only about 0.2 km square. The elevation is very difficult to estimate from an aerial photgraph. The S facing bank appears to be the steepest and provides the longest route to the top, the structure being 'skewed' towards the N. The definition is enhanced by a light dusting of snow which seems to have accumulated in a line mounting the centre of the S bank the possible position of a fence. The N bank is worth investigation as the structure appears to end abruptly here. There is a possible access causeway which mounts the E end of the S bank. There is no visible evidence of building sites on the top. The surrounding fields are greatly improved though the field containing the structure is large and irregularly shaped with mixed land use. The western edge of the structure is fenced, and land to the immediate west and south has been cross-ploughed. The structure itself appears to have been left for rough grazing. The summit of the mound is gently undulating. It could not be confirmed as to whether the summit had been landscaped in any way. The existing field boundary occupies the lower and mid slope on its S aspect and utilises one of three terraced slopes that are situated on S side of structure. These terraces are well defined with a steep S facing aspect the sides of which contain a high quantity of cobbles. The terraces are each of a comparable size tapering in excess of 2 m in height at the west to approx 30 cms in height in the east. The width of the lowest terrace is approx 2 m. It is possible the terraces continued into the fields to the immediate E. These have been heavily ploughed destroying the profile of the structure. The ploughing may also have destroyed the associated pits (6018 1002.01). The site has been landscaped prior to the existing foeld configeration, possibly Pre-historic/Roman in origin. He noted that the roughly circular earthwork was between the road to Dallow and the farm buildings, with farm buildings standing on its N bank with a modern wall and two farm roads cutting the circle. The diameter of circle was about 70 yds. Standing stones remained along boundary wall to public road (the largest being 5'3"" high and 7'8"" wide), these forming part of the S circle boundary. There was a broad terrace several yds wide to N of the stones. A small mound in the E of enclosure appeared to have been dug into. He also noted remains of a bank of bank of small stones and earth S of circle across public road , along which were 6 low standing stones (much weathered) in a double row. ( Transcribed from letter to Mrs elgee 1937). Noted on mini OS cards as a stone circle at Cast Hills. Wood E S Ancient Buildings of Harrogate. Ordnance Survey index F.I. 20.02.63 notes 'the main defensive enclosure situated at SE 2038 7160, is badly mutilated and poorly defined, probable remains of the stone revetment to its rampart occur at SE 2038 7155 and incorporates the ""standing stones"" indicated by Kent, which are erroneously classified by E Wood as traces of a Bronze Age circle. Part of a slight bank of boulders and small stones at SE 2036 7152 cannot be identified with the earthwork. There is no trace of a mound within the enclosure, or of any barrows in the vicinity. The linear outworks which are fragmentary and diverse in character, do not form a defensive feature. Alleged ""pit dwellings"" at SE 2138 7108 consist of 8 small surface quarry workings. The size, shape and construction of the central enclosure together with association of an outer linear ditch and barrows suggests an Iron Age affinity. Parish record at NYCC records that line of stones were in existence in 1975. In 1987 Mary Kershaw reported site substantially built on, standing stones still in position, plus a few large stones behind existing farm buildings, which are possibly associated with arc of stones which could be assiciated with a raised area in the next field. Some stones are 5' high and 3' across. In 1993 NYCC stated there were no significant archaeological remains. The complex is situated in the field to the SE of Haver Close Farm, near the barn on the road leading to the farm. It is on the crown of a steeply sloping hill dropping down to the river. The boundary of the enclosure is circular to the S,E and NE, and then continues in a WNW direction crossing the farm road N of barn. It then turns S running parallel to the road back to the barn. There are three small enclosures, possibly hut circles, in the main enclosure, NE of the barn. A curved bank runs S from these to the enclosure boundary. There ia a possible entrance to the enclosure on the S side. There is a possible pit E of the barn. This feature adjoins the field system to the E and NE of the barn dropping down to the river.
