"IN18STMTT: Streethay, Lichfield: Stone tools",,,,, ,,,,, ,,,,, Find No.,Sample no.,Context,Feature,Type,Description ,,5029,,Rotary quern,Fragment of a flat rotary quern. Made from coarse-grained red sandstone. Broken across probable handle hole. No other features survive. Coarse dressing on upper face. Lower face is heavily worn to a concave surface with a smoother band of wear around the outer perimeter. Thinner towards the centre than the outer edge. The surviving parts of the handle hole indicates that it was originally rectangular with slight tapering of the sides and possibly 30mm across. Unable to estimate original diameter of the quern. Dimensions 57mm thick on outer edge; 30mm thick towards centre. ,,5134,,Rotary quern,Fragment of a flat rotary quern. Segment survives. Probably made from Millstone Grit. Upper face mostly destroyed from breakage and more recent damage. The surviving outer edge is pecked in vertical rows to dress the flat edge. The central hole doesn't survive. Lower face is heavily worn to a concave cross-section with a smoother band of wear around the outer perimeter. Radius from outer edge of central hole is 175mm; Thickness on outer edge 90mm; thickness at central hole c.70mm. ,,5136,Shallow pit 5138,?Bun Quern fragment,Coarse-grained sandstone. Stone quite abraded. Fragment with base surviving. Base flat dressed with coarse pecking. Not worn so perhaps a quern in the process of manufacture. Quite thick quern with rounded top. Uncertain whether outer edge and inner hopper survive. Length from hopper edge to outer perimeter c.140mm. MTh 115mm ,,5170,Pit 5171 with charcoal,,? Burnt. Fire-cracked and fragmented. Much of surface destroyed. Cannot determine if it had been shaped and or used. ,,5145,Gully with burnt material,,Fragment of heat-cracked rock. ,,5327,Central pit of RH6,,Large block of sandstone. Fragment of something larger though all surfaces are irregular and breakage pattern is difficult to work out. Traces of stone dressing on outer edge using thin chisel and working vertically. ,,5137,Shallow pit 5138,Tessera,Fragment of cuboid piece. Light grey ?quartzite. One rounded face. Traces of brown cement on sides. ,,5137,Shallow pit 5138,Tessera,Segment-shaped piece. Light grey ?quartzite. One rounded face. Traces of brown cement on sides. ,6,5213,,Flint debitage,One tiny flint flake ,29,5398,,Flint debitage,One tiny flint flake
