Abstract:
Report on the excavation in 1999 of a substantial short cist discovered during the excavation of a trench for a water main. The remains of an adult female were discovered interred within the cist, which was covered by a substantial capstone. No grave goods were recovered from the cist; radiocarbon dating of the human remains places the burial within the Early to Middle Bronze Age. Adjacent to the cist burial was a wide, shallow feature containing a charcoal rich deposit. Numerous plant macrofossils were recovered from samples of this deposit. A number of adjoining sherds of a large bucket shaped vessel, which dates to approximately the middle-second to early-first millennium cal BC, and sherds from a further two vessels were also recovered. A radiocarbon date from a charred seed of barley corroborated the artefact dating. Includes specialist reports on
