Abstract:
Excavation of a medieval cemetery associated with Newbattle Abbey at Newbattle Abbey College Annexe, near Dalkeith, Midlothian, involved the removal of 127 inhumations and a large quantity of charnel. Evidence of medieval metalworking activity pre-dating an area of part of the cemetery was also uncovered. Nine stone-capped graves were discovered to the west of the abbey church. To the east-northeast of the abbey church the remains of a stone-built building, possibly part of an infirmary, were unearthed. Specialist reports include: Human bone; Pottery; Building materials; Metal & slag.
