Abstract:
Proposes a new scheme for the development of Irish passage tombs, and discusses the information derivable on the nature, distribution, and expression of power in Neolithic Ireland. Six stages from 3800/3400 cal BC to 1750 cal BC are defined and the relationship between size of passage tomb and size of tomb-building group considered. Aggrandizement could have arisen by competition in ancestor worship, or by introducing novel, exotic elements into an exclusive 'culture club'.
