Abstract:
[SK 3026]. The detailed structural history of the church is unravelled and dates suggested for the remaining AS fabric as follows: main fabric of the burial chamber (partly below ground) including recesses for royal shrines and massive external plinths, c 716-57; addition of the church above (chancel central tower, porticus and crypt vaulting), c 827-40 (?mausoleum of Wiglaf), cutting of NW and SW access stairways to the crypt, probably to provide one-way circulation for pilgrims to the shrine of St Wystan (murdered c 850).
