A simple egalitarian society c 1000 BC evolved rapidly into a complex of chiefdoms based on hillforts as tribal foci and redistribution centres which, by 1st century BC, could be classed as proto-urban. By mid-1st century BC primitive states were emerging, and developed still further into an urban network with satellite markets, continuing under Roman rule into early 5th century AD. Au(adp) | ||||||
