Abstract:
The essential factors of time and space are often overlooked in statisticai studies. Correlation depends on the quality and selection of the data supplied and even on the sequence of comparison of the attributes. Statistical significance does not necessarily mean cultural significance, and vice versa. Population evidence could be drawn more often from cultural evidence, using the volume and number of cooking-pots as indicative of the average size of a family and the number of families in a community respectively. See also D J Tugby's paper on Archaeology and Statistics in the same volume, pp 635-48; a general, theoretical paper based entirely on American publications and sites. DFR
