Abstract:
Discusses the diverse origins of Anglo-Saxon towns: some like Winchester were political/ecclesiastical centres which retained importance as regional foci from Roman times; others like Southampton were primarily trading places. London and York combined all these functions. Then came the Mercian fortifications of 8th-10th centuries the Danish fortifications, and the expansion under Alfred and his successors of the burghal system which was to be so momentous in the history of the English town. Instead of the 65 urban places of Roman Britain there were by 1066 over 100, many of them much larger than the Roman towns. Discussion contributions are printed at the end of the paper (Février, Jankuhn, Bullough, Murat).
