Evidence for continuity between late Roman and early Saxon Winchester is examined and the special character of the royal estate is stressed. The complementary character of the settlement at Winchester with that at Hamwih is noted. The development of urban growth in the 10th century is seen as a deliberate product of Alfred's military policy. The physical appearance and differing functions of the great minsters is examined and the development of the ecclesiastical and royal precincts in late Saxon period is discussed. LASB | |||||||||
