Abstract:		 An example of the way in which remains of great potential value can slip through the net of archaeological provision. The general feeling had been that Chepstow could reveal little in the way of early medieval occupation. However, recent building work undertaken at Bridge Street, without a concurrent watching brief, may have destroyed vital deposits from this era, along with earlier and later layers. Monmouth Archaeological Society performed eleventh hour rescue work, attempting to salvage whatever possible. In the aftermath of this, the practical application of PPG16 in Wales and other forms of archaeological provision are challenged.
