Recounts a tangled tale of inertia and red tape which resulted in a prime site for Roman York being given far too little time for examination in advance of redevelopment. The principal difficulty is that even in a city designated AAI (Area of Archaeological Importance) there are not necessarily any funds made available for excavation in advance of destruction. Observance of the Environmental Impact regulations of 1988 would at least help (see also 89/1423). | |||
