Abstract:
The recent flood of excavations - sites dug 'because they are there' and threatened - is unlikely to produce many useful reports. Quality control has succumbed to cost control, and research designs are rare or absent. In contrast the Flag Fen approach is to seek its support from the general public, learn from them, and avoid the phoney excesses of the 'heritage' approach. On the wider scene, archaeology must integrate itself into the general conservation movement, and this needs effort from archaeologists themselves. Will the public educate the profession before it is too late? (See also 91/74)
