Reports on the reaction from archaeologists to a speech given by Alan Melton, Leader of Fenland District Council, in June 2011, in which he appeared to indicate that from July 1st there would be no more requirement for archaeological evaluation to inform planning decisions, nor conditions that required excavation or preservation by using alternative construction methods, except in known historical areas. Responses included a letter from RESCUE to Fenland District Council and a letter to the Times from a number of academic archaeologists and members of the Archaeological Forum. A statement indicating a retreat from his earlier comments was subsequently issued by Councillor Melton. However, it is feared that his view that archaeology is too high a cost on development may be echoed in unfortunate decisions in the Fens and elsewhere. LD | |
