Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
Discusses the damage done to archaeological sites by agricultural practices. The advantages of a good metal detecting survey of arable land and the destruction caused by illegal detecting are mentioned, followed by discussion of ethical issues surrounding the 'grey' areas in between these two extremes. Advantages and disadvantages of the Portable Antiquities Scheme (PAS) are considered. The high profile given to spectacular finds is increasing the popularity of metal-detecting as a hobby; it is suggested that increasing public understanding would be the best way of counteracting negative effects arising from this.
